Midlife Crising

I was lucky to do some interviews/talks on various occasions during the first phase of the pandemic; they are all interesting because they show me in retrospect where i stood and how I adapted to different moments of this new situation, but none of them as harshly as the conversation I had with Hatem Imam on the 27th of May.
It was a commission by the IFA Galerie, to accompany my solo show In the Presence/Absence of Mazen Kerbaj that was curated by Hatem, and he didn’t hesitate to delve into quite unexpected subjects, including the Corona Diaries and my reluctance to pursue them at that moment. But this was the easiest subject we talked about; the rest resembles more a therapy than an artist conversation, and I am grateful to Hatem for putting me in front a much-needed mirror. Sometimes closeness can do wonders.

This conversation was done to accompany the solo exhibition “In the Presence/Absence of Mazen Kerbaj” that opened at the IFA Galerie Berlin in February 2020. Two weeks after the opening, the show had to close due to the lockdown imposed to fight the Covid-19 pandemic; it opened again in May 2020 albeit with new safety measures and restrictions. The conversation took place on the 27th of June 2020 via video conferencing, Hatem Imam being in Beirut and Mazen Kerbaj in Berlin. It was recorded in one sitting, with no prior discussion.
